You Have to Clean Chick Butts?

We recently welcomed some new chicks to the farm this week, and with that comes cleaning little chick bottoms! Yes, you read that correctly, chicks need their butts aka their "vents" cleaned/cleared. This dried poopy chick bottom can also be called "Pasty Butt" or "Pasted Vent". If this is not taken care of it can causes issues including distress or in severe cases even death! But luckily, if you catch it early enough, cleaning the little chick bottoms can be a quick and easy process.

Chick with "Pasty Butt" or "Pasted Vent"

Directions

  1. Fill a bucket with warm water deep enough so when the chick is inside their bottom is submerged.

  2. Place chick in warm water and let it soak if needed.

  3. Gently wipe chick's bottom with soft towel or paper towel until clean. In some case you may need to use a mild soap or oil to help remove the feces.

  4. Wipe chick clean and dry with separate cloth.

  5. Place chick back in brooder.
